Yonkers Police Officer Shot
Yonkers, NY – A female Yonkers police officer was shot in the face by two suspects at Ridge Drive at Marshall Road on Monday night.
The officer was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where she is in stable condition after the bullet apparently went straight through her chin.
The incident started as officers responded to a 911 call of a suspicious vehicle at around 8:15 PM. NY Daily News reports that two officers responded to the call.
As the officers were first approaching the car, at least one suspect opened fire.
After the officer was shot, officers responded and engaged in a gunfight with the suspects. Both suspects were eventually taken into custody.
A wife of a retired police officer lives nearby and told the Daily News, “We were doing homework with my sons. It was a semi-automatic that was going off. We called the cops and they said stay inside, it was an active police shooting.”
“Even after the cops arrived, they kept firing. It went on for about 10 minutes.
“The first shots were like a pistol, and then there were other guns going off, like they were exchanging fire. There were at least 30 shots,” she said.
Another witness said that he saw them pulling the wounded officer out.
“Usually there are shots fired and someone runs away. This was a gunfight,” he said. “Nobody was running away.”
One of the suspects has been hospitalized. It hasn’t been reported at this time how many bullet holes he earned.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the wounded officer as she recovers.
