Whitley County, KY – Whitley County Deputies shot and killed Courtney Taylor, on Friday night after responding to a welfare check at her home.
According to The Lexington Herald-Leader, a relative called the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office about 10:12 PM after going to the residence of Larry and Courtney Taylor. The relative had gone to the home, located on U.S. 25 West in Williamsburg, to check on the family after not hearing from them or being able to contact them. WC Sheriff Colan Harrell that the relative “…observed a body and retreated.”
Two Deputies responded and when they entered the home, a female suspect, later identified as Courtney Taylor, age 41, pointed a gun at one Deputy. According to WKYT, Sheriff Harrell said that the Deputy told her repeatedly to put the gun down and she refused. The Deputy shot her and she was taken to the University of Kentucky-Chandler Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Upon further search of the home, Whitley County Deputies found three people dead inside the home. They were identified as Courtney Taylor’s husband Larry, age 51, and the couple’s two teenage daughters, Jessie Taylor, age 18, and another female, age 13, whose name was not released. The Kentucky State Police were contacted to respond and conduct the investigation. Both Whitley County Deputies have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.
Sheriff Harrell said that he knew both Larry and Courtney Taylor and that this was “unbelievable.” He said that there had not been any prior calls to his agency about trouble at the residence. The Sheriff also said that it is believed that the three victims had been dead for several hours before being discovered and were believed to have been shot in their beds.
Sheriff Harrell said that the shooting has been hard on the Deputies and the people in the community. He said, “You try to put a place for things in your life, in someone else’s life, especially if they’re close to you and this is something that would be hard to do.”
No details were provided about injuries to the three victims. No Deputies or other civilians were injured during the incident.
