Lt. Greg Abbott’s Makes Sarcastic Comments
Cobb County, Georgia – A police lieutenant is under investigation after making a sarcastic comment that police only kill black people. (Video below)
Cobb County Police Lt. Greg Abbott asked the passenger during a traffic stop in July 2016 to grab her cell phone and she told him she was afraid to move her hands since she’s seen so many videos of police shootings.
In the video the woman said, “No, no, no. I’ve just seen way too many videos of cops …”
The police officer responded, “But you’re not black. Remember, we only shoot black people. Yeah. We only kill black people, right? All the video you’ve seen, have you seen the black people get killed?”
“Right,” the woman said.
“You have,” the officer responded.
An attorney for the driver said she believes the officer’s comments were sarcastic, according to the New York Post. Attorney Suri Chada Jimenez said the officer was being sarcastic because the driver “gave him some lip.”
“It makes you cringe when you hear it,” Jimenez said, according to the New York Post. “It’s unacceptable.”
Lance LoRusso, Abbott’s attorney, told TV station WSB in a statement that Lt. Abbott is cooperating with the investigation and “his comments must be observed in their totality to understand their context.”
“He was attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger. In context, his comments were clearly aimed at attempting to gain compliance by using the passenger’s own statements and reasoning to avoid making an arrest,” said LoRusso.
Cobb County police Chief Mike Register said Lt. Abbott is on administrative duties until the investigation is complete.
Register told WSB-TV that Abbott was a good officer and never had any racial complaints during his 28-year career. Chief Register said, “no matter what context it was said, it shouldn’t have been said,” and that it is being dealt with “head-on.”
