Canton, Ohio – Bodycam footage shows the moment that a Canton Police Officer took out Hayden Stutz with a well-placed headshot (video below.)
Just before 1 AM Wednesday morning, Hayden Stutz, 24, called 911 and hung up, according to Canton Rep. He then called back and said that he needed and inhaler and that he had a gun in his garage. He then said that he had the gun on him and that he didn’t do well around police.
Two Canton police officers arrived to find Stutz asking for an inhaler. Stutz then said that he had a pistol in the bush near him and he started choking his 19-year-old girlfriend. Stutz yelled at officers that he had a gun and didn’t care what happened. At one point he appeared to be moving for the gun. Officers repeatedly ordered him to release his girlfriend; Stutz refused.
Finally, one of the officers ended it with a well-placed headshot. Stutz initially appeared to be DRT, but he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
It appears that the incident was a result of a Stutz having a mental health episode which suddenly caused him to become violent and act erratically. He was not actually armed with a weapon as he claimed to be.
“From the information that I have and everything that I’ve seen, the officer acted well within standards, but we have a lot more investigating to do,” the chief said. “We’ve been training so much in de-escalation and with crisis intervention training and training addressing issues with the mentally ill … De-escalation is a priority for us and both of those officers are trained in that.”
The initial headshot impact was edited out of the video to make it less graphic.
