Boynton Beach Police Say Owner Ran Into Bank, Left Dog In Car With Windows Rolled Up
Boynton Beach, Florida – The Boynton Beach Police Department rescued a pit bull July 3 that was trapped in a locked car as temperatures reached at least 110 degrees, according to a Facebook post from the department. (Video below.)
“Repeat after us…it is never OK to leave your pet in an unattended vehicle,” the police department wrote in a Facebook post. “It is illegal and if you do it in the City of Boynton Beach, you are going to be cited for it – at a minimum.”
The police officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a “Good Samaritan” that the dog was left in a light blue Buick parked near a bank.
The car was turned off and all the windows were rolled up. Police responded and went store-to-store looking for the pet’s owner but had no luck finding her.
Police Sgt. John Dunlop then used his baton to break the window and rescue the dog.
The owner showed up 10 to 15 minutes after the 9-1-1 call was placed, police estimate.
The owner said she had just left the park with her dog and drove to the bank. She said the drive-thru was closed so she ran inside, leaving her dog in the car. The owner was given a ticket and cited for leaving her dog unattended in the vehicle.
Most people the police encounter are good pet owners but aren’t aware of the law, the police said.
“They just don’t know the law or they think that it’s OK if it’s only for a minute,” the police posted.
“Our advice, stop being lazy (harsh, yes, but true),” the police posted on Facebook. “Bring your pet home and then go back out to run whatever errands you need to do. We are animal lovers, and we’re lucky our residents and visitors are too.”
The police said the 9-1-1 call likely saved the dog’s life.
