Webster, Texas – Texas DPS Trooper Chad Blackburn is fighting for his life after he was was struck by a drunk driver Monday morning.

Trooper Chad Blackburn was sitting on the side of  Interstate 45 at NASA Road 1 at around 2:30 AM. A female drunk driver in a red Mercedes slammed into the back of Trooper Blackburn’s patrol car.

After the collision, the fire department needed to cut Trooper Blackburn out of his vehicle. They then transported him to the hospital. The trooper has undergone surgery and is still in critical condition.

The female driver was not injured. Officers could smell the odor of alcohol and she was arrested.

DPS Sgt. Richard Standifer told Click2Houston, “We are actively out here in the middle of the night to get these drunk drivers off the road. When we fail to do that we become victims or we become nothing more than folks trying to clean this up. Clearly, the trooper as a victim in this case.”
