Manhunt Underway For Suspect Who Shot At Two San Jose Cops, Heroes Refuse To Return Fire

San Jose, California – A suspect opened fire on two police officers Sunday night and then fled, prompting a massive manhunt for the would-be killer.

At around 7:35 PM the two San Jose Police Department officers were on foot patrol by Luby and Ripley drives when they attempted contact with a group of men. The group fled from the police officers and one of the suspects turned and opened fire on the officers. The heroes refused to return fire because of the number of innocent people who could potentially be hit by stray bullets. The officers got to cover and avoided being shot.

Lt. Eddie Pedreira told NBC Bay Area, “They did find cover. The officers did not have a good field of fire, so they did not, rightly so, return fire, as we do not practice shooting indiscriminately,” Pedreira said. “Even when someone is shooting at us, we have to ensure there’s a proper and safe backdrop, unlike the suspect who randomly shot several rounds.”

Unfortunately, there was no reasonably practical way for these heroes to stop the suspect. There’s a manhunt for the attempted killer, but he has not been identified so far.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male adult in his 20s, 6 feet tall, 160 to 180 pounds, clean shaven, wearing a black and gray Pendleton shirt with a white T-shirt underneath and dark pants.

Just earlier in the day, nearby Stanislous County Deputy Dennis Wallace was murdered execution style, “We are concerned about the climate; we are concerned that there has been something lost in the concept of law and order,” Pedreira said. “And it is near and dear to our hearts when an officer is tragically shot down.”

Law enforcement gunfire murders are up 70% this year.
