San Antonio Chief McManus On Police Haters: ‘We protect them … And they give us a big F U’

San Antonio, Texas – In the wake of a shooting that left one of his officers dead and another wounded, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus lashed out at “police haters,” according to the San Antonio Express-News.

“I’m angry at the police haters, I’m sick of the police haters,” Chief McManus said while at a community event on Saturday. “We protect them. We defend them. And they give us a big F U. And I’m sick of it.”

Chief McManus made his comments at an event called “Coffee with the Cops,” the newspaper reported.

San Antonio Police Officer Miguel Moreno was shot and killed June 29 by a suspect with “an extensive criminal history,” according to the newspaper. Another officer, Julio Cavazos, was also wounded in the shootout when the two officers approached men near a car that appeared to have been broken into.

The San Antonio Express-News reported that the shooter died when he attempted to flee.  The shooter was shot once in the buttocks and then suffered a head wound that could have been self-inflicted, the newspaper reported.

Officer Moreno died Friday morning.

“I’m at a loss for words to describe what a tragedy this is,” Chief McManus said. “Imagine one of your relatives was shot and killed on the street for apparently no reason.”

In November of 2016, San Antonio Police Detective Benjamin Marconi was also gunned down while writing a traffic ticket.

The newspaper reported there was an impromptu memorial for Moreno that was growing and attracting people who were offering condolences. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered flags be at half-staff in San Antonio and at all state offices.

“There’s an officer down and they need as much help as they can,” said David Moreno, 31, told the newspaper. “I’ve been putting it off, taking care of my family, but this family needs me now.” Moreno is not related to the fallen officer.
