Falmouth, Massachusetts – A man identified as Russell Pena, 40, was arrested on Friday for distributing cocaine and heroin. But it was what this career criminal did after his arrest that placed officers lives in serious danger and proof that police must be vigilant when dealing with criminals.
According to WJBD Radio, police had executed a search warrant on a vehicle as part of a narcotics investigation. As a result of the investigation and subsequent to the search warrant, police found cocaine, marijuana and $1450 in cash. Pena, who was operating the vehicle, was arrested for drug charges and transported to Falmouth police station for booking.
During the booking process, Pena reportedly became physically combative with officers. As he fought police, Pena was able to reach into the groin area of his pants, retrieve a plastic bag containing suspected heroin, rip it open, and throw the heroin into the faces of the two officers who were attempting to subdue him.
Aside from the danger of exposing officers to heroin itself, an added and greater risk comes with the fact that the highly dangerous drug Fentanyl is often added to heroin to increase its potency. Just a small amount of Fentanyl can cause death.
“It’s absorbed into your skin, your eyes, you inhale it, not knowing what it is, very concerning,” Falmouth Police Chief Ed Dunne told CBS Boston. After regaining control of the drug dealer, quick thinking officers shut down the station’s air conditioning system to prevent the spread of the dangerous narcotic. Both officers and Pena were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
“Police officers, they never know what they’re going to encounter out there,” said Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline whose officers took part in the initial investigation. “There’s nothing routine and there can’t be anything routine about it because once things start to become routine, they become complacent.”
Bother officers were hospitalized after the incident and later released.
In addition to the felony drug charges, Pena has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault and battery and obstruction of justice. He is being held on $25,000 bond.
