Oh crap, I need a tourniquet!

Hello everyone, Donut here with another product spotlight. Today we are going to be taking a look at a cool little tool that can save lives: RATS tourniquets.

I’ve been excited about this one for a while now because I’ve seen them for years and I just haven’t gotten around to playing with them. These things were even on the cover of Popular Mechanics.

The inventor of RATS Tourniquets, Jeff Kirkham, knows what he’s talking about when it comes to saving lives. Jeff has spent 28 years in the Army as a Special Forces soldier. He’s been in all sorts of crappy environments for two decades trying not to catch lead poisoning. Ever hear of Black Rifle Coffee Company? Jeff is one of the co-founders. What about Readyman? Jeff is one of the instructors. Plus, I’ve never seen someone swing aluminum baseball bats around like this guy

All badassness aside, Jeff’s tourniquets have been endorsed by medical professionals, combat veterans, and special forces guys all over the place. If you head over to the endorsements section of the RATS tourniquet website, you can see that these things work very well.

I spoke with a good buddy of mine over at Funker530.com about the RATS tourniquet before writing this. He told me that a few years ago he was wounded pretty bad in combat and attempted to put 3 CAT tourniquets on himself before cranking the windless off of every single one of them from an adrenaline rush. He told me that he wishes that there were some RATS tourniquets around for him to use.

With that being said, I’m not bashing RAT, SOFTT, or SWATT tourniquets. My buddy from Funker also told me that they used several RAT tourniquets to save his friend’s life who was wounded in the same fight. There are different applications for all of them and they are all useful at stopping people from dying. From talking with the inventor of RATS, doing research on them, and personally applying them to myself and my family the past few days, I know that they will work to stop severe hemorrhaging.

I would like to take this chance to personally apologize to my fiance and kids: I’m sorry for ambushing you the past few weeks, holding you down, and cutting off bloodflow to an extremity. I like these tourniquets.

Little Donut doesn’t mind

I’ve been teaching my kids first aid for a few years now, but I took this opportunity to teach them how to use RATS tourniquets. As you can see in the video, my 7 year old knocked it out. It took me maybe 5 minutes to teach him the proper way to put it on. I actually made the video above before the Townville Elementary School shooting. If you follow our Facebook page, I talked about how my daughter goes to Townville Elementary. It’s sad that I have to do this, but I’m going to start putting a RATS tourniquet into their backpacks.

Again, let’s all give thanks to firefighter Jamie Brock for keeping the shooter from doing more damage.
