Attempted Assassination Of Sergeant Sylvia Young A Targeted Attack On Law Enforcement

Philadelphia, PA – Philadelphia Police Department Sergeant Sylvia Young and University of Pennsylvania Officer Eddie Miller were shot on Friday night when an ambush assassination attempt was launched on Sergeant Young.

The incident occurred 11:20 PM Friday on the 5200 block of Sansom Street. Sergeant Sylvia Young was sitting in her patrol car in the area when she was ambushed by a gunman. The suspect is believed to have emptied his entire magazine and Sergeant Young was hit by 8 of those bullets. Most of the shots hit Sergeant Young in the left arm; her vest may have been able to stop many of the bullets from going further.

Officers in the area pursued the would-be assassin as he fled on foot. The suspect fired shots into the Maximum Level Lounge, shooting a security guard before grabbing a woman and using her as a human shield to prevent officers from returning fire. The suspect then shot that woman in the leg before continuing to flee.

While he continued to run from officers, the suspect fired into a nearby car, shooting a man and woman in their chests. One of the victims has died and the other is in critical condition.

Officers pursued the suspect for another block where the gunfight continued in an alley. UPenn Officer Eddie Miller and the suspect were both shot in the exchange of gunfire. Officer Miller was shot in the leg and buttocks, and the suspect was shot dead.

Fox29 reported that Commissioner Ross found a note in the suspect’s belongings expressing hated for police officers.

Sergeant Sylvia Young is a 19 year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and is reported to be in stable condition at this time. Officer Eddie Miller retired with the Philadelphia Police Department and had been with University of Pennsylvania Police Department for two years.

Donald Trump tweeted out his support for the Philadelphia Police Department.
