Terrorist Attack On Police In Paris

Paris, France –  Two police officers have been murdered in an apparent terrorist attack Thursday night. Authorities are saying that the scene is still not secure at the time of this writing.

According to CNN,  the incident occurred when a car stopped at 102 Champs-Elysees, in front of a police van.

Ministry spokesman Pierre Henry Brandet said that at around 9 PM, the suspect got out of the car and opened fire on the police van with an “automatic weapon.”  Police returned fire and the attacker was killed in the gun battle. Witnesses reported hearing at least 20 shots.

Two police officers were killed in the ambush and a third police officer has been wounded.  None of their names have been released yet, and the condition of the third police officer was not released.

The identity of the attacker has not been released.  It is not known at this time if he acted alone. However, law enforcement said that the suspect had made terrorist threats against law enforcement in the past.

The Champs-Elysses remains closed, and all businesses in the area have closed.  Police are telling everyone to avoid the area and that it is not secure.

President Trump has offered condolences to the families of the fallen officers, and said that it appears to be a terrorist attack.

“On the face of it, the officers were deliberately targeted,” interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

An unconfirmed source said that a bystander may have been hit by “crossfire”.

The attack comes just three days before French general elections and was already in increased state of alert.

The U.S. State Department sent out a tweet, which said “If you’re in #Paris, monitor local news. #ChampsElysées has been closed. Authorities are telling people to avoid the area after a shooting.”
