Officer Jeremy Mason Was Shot In The Face But Still Managed To Get The Bad Guy
Jacksonville, Florida – Jacksonville County Sheriff Officer Jeremy Mason was shot in the face during the pursuit of a suspected bank robber but still managed to stay in the pursuit. He won the gunfight when he fatally shot the three-time felon.
Police were following up on tips on bank robberies when they approached Michael Harris on July 25, who was a suspect. When police approached Harris, he got into a car with a woman and led police on a high speed chase.
During the two-mile chase, Harris was leaning out of both sides of the car window and shooting at the police. During this time, he shot Officer Mason in the face.
The pursuit ended when the car Harris was in was hit by another car when they ran a stop sign. Harris then got out of the car with his gun.
The officers told Harris to drop his gun. Instead, Harris fired again at the police officers, according to the Florida Times-Union. Harris was then shot dead by Officer Mason and Det. Brad Hurst. Police said Hurst was in the area and had heard about the chase on the police radio and joined the pursuit.
At a press conference, Jacksonville County Sheriff Mike Williams said Officer Mason, who is a K9 officer, was in stable condition but “has got a long road back.”
“We talk a lot about these men and women … who put their lives on the line every single day,” Sheriff Williams said. “It’s not a tagline, it’s not a slogan. This is an example of that. Here you have an officer who is shot during a pursuit, he continues that pursuit, so he puts himself between the suspect, who is an incredibly violent felon, and the community and ultimately winds up stopping him from endangering the entire community.”
Sheriff Williams said Tuesday it was still unclear what involvement the driver had with Harris.
