Off-Duty NJ Police Officer, Christopher Cummings, Tackles Armed Murder Suspect
Atlantic City, New Jersey – Murder suspect Lewis Maisonet is in custody after being detained by off-duty Sergeant Christopher Cummings bravely tackled the armed assailant on Thursday.
The shooting took place this past Thursday at approximately 12:00pm at the Tanger Outlet Mall on Baltic Ave in downtown Atlantic City. The incident began when Lewis Maisonet walked into the Zumiez store located at the plaza. Maisonet shot and killed store manager, Chris Romero, as a result of an apparent domestic dispute.
Immediately after the shooting, Maisonet exited the store and fled across the street where he turned the gun on himself. After firing one shot to his abdomen, off-duty Bellmawr, NJ (Camden County) Police Sergeant Christopher Cummings tackled the murderer, disarmed him, and kept him detained until Atlantic City Police arrived. Sgt. Cummings not only captured an armed murderer, but prevented a suicide. Maisonet was last listed in critical condition in a nearby hospital.
In a statement released on their Facebook Page, Bellmawr Police, located just outside of Philadelphia, identified Cummings and congratulated him on a job well done. We too thank the brave and heroic New Jersey Sergeant for his courage to step up and take down an armed killer. Well done Sarge.
Here’s Bellmawr Police Department’s statement on the incident:
We would just like to take a moment to commend the heroic actions of one of our officers today. As you may have heard, there was a shooting in the outlets in Atlantic City that stemmed from a domestic incident. At some point, after fatally shooting one male, the shooter turned the gun on himself and fired one round into his own torso. Our very own Sgt. Christopher Cummings was off-duty and in close proximity to him and immediately attempted to disarm the suspect. He managed to wrestle the firearm from the gunman before he could inflict any further harm upon himself or anyone else and the suspect was then taken into custody. Great job on your courageous actions Sgt. Cummings.
