Matt Uhrin: FedEx Man – American Hero. FedEx Responds To Calls To Fire Him

Iowa City, Iowa – FedEx driver Matt Uhrin was captured on video taking on a whole group of aggressive flag-burners in order to save the American flag from their flames. Now FedEx has responded to the incident.

A group of protesters had gathered on Thursday around noon in front of the pedestrian mall to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline and a number of other issues, according to KCRG.  Bystanders began recording the gathering as the group attempted to torch a few American flags.

FedEx driver Matt Uhrin then jumped in and began extinguishing the flames with a fire extinguisher.  He saved the flags from being torched any further and told them if they don’t like the flag then get out!  The protesters said the act was done to fight fascism and one onlooker added that this was no way to build unity.

Since the video became viral, a vocal minority have been calling for Matt Uhrin to be fired from FedEx. Technically, by using force to take a flag that didn’t belong to him, he committed a class C felony robbery. There’s not a jury in America that would convict him though, so he’ll never be arrested or charged. The whiners contacted FedEx demanding he be fired for committing a felony while working and interfering with First Amendment speech.

The idea of any punishment for Matt Uhrin was not popular at all. When anti-police group CopBlock tried to convince their followers to complain to FedEx about this hero, their community overwhelmingly disagreed.

The number one response with 1,135 likes was:

Even CopBlockers can't agree with their leaders on this one.

FedEx’s response to all of the whiners was released on Saturday:

We have reviewed the matter in Iowa City involving driver Matt Uhrin. He remains a FedEx employee & we have no plans to change his status.

It appears that FedEx made the right decision. Any actions against Matt Uhrin for this incident would likely have decimated their business.

While Matt Uhrin appears to be in the clear, two of the flag-burners were arrested following the incident, both were charged for open burning, a misdemeanor.

Police arrested 21-year-old Kelli Ebensberger of Iowa City and 23-year-old Paul Osgerby of Ames.  According to the police report, officers say they saw Osgerby setting fire to a U.S. flag Ebensberger was holding. The pair did not have the proper permit from the fire department for a fire.  Ebensberger and Osgerby are due in court February 23.
