Smyra, DE – Corrections Sergeant Steven Floyd was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and he was awarded the medal of valor for saving his colleagues during a prison riot on Wednesday.

Inmates had staged a fight to lure Lt. Steven Floyd over. They then grabbed him and forced him into a closet. Lt. Floyd was able to call out to other responding officers that it was a trap and they needed to get out.

According to NBC 10, Lt. Steven Floyd was found unresponsive about 5:06 AM when Delaware State Police breached C Building at the John T. Vaughn Correctional Center after a 20 hours standoff. His death has been ruled a homicide by trauma.

In a statement, the DOC said that inmates had apparently used small metal foot lockers filled with water as heavy blocks to build a wall at entrances to C Building.  Police were unable to enter the building until a backhoe was used to finally enter the building.  Within two minutes, a female hostage had been rescued along with a female counselor and the building was re-secured.  All 120 inmates from the building are considered suspects.

NBC 10 reports that during a vigil for the fallen hero on Friday, a battered and bruised Corrections Officer Wilkerson spoke to the family and apologized. He said that he wishes that it was him that had died in Lt. Floyd’s place.

After Lt. Steven Floyd was murdered, protesters showed up at the prison in support of his killers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of murdered hero Lt. Steven Floyd, the other hostages held in the riot, and the Delaware Department of Corrections.
