Lowndes County Narcotics Deputy Shot Multiple Times

Jackson, Mississippi – A Lowndes County narcotics deputy was shot in both legs Monday morning, following a high speed chase.

Around 10 AM a pursuit began in Webster County, near Mathiston, when a Webster County deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for a suspected DUI.  A chase ensued and continued over three counties, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, a white Hyundai SUV, using stop sticks, but the driver was able to avoid them and continue into Lowndes County.

Officers again deployed stop sticks at and were successful in immobilizing the driver at U.S. 82.  The driver then exited the vehicle and fired on officers.  One Lowndes County deputy was struck in both legs.

Officers returned fire and the suspect died. The cause of death is believed to be acute lead poisoning.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant arrived on scene just after 11:30 AM.  They are waiting to release the identity of the suspect until the next of kin is notified.

Reports indicate that multiple weapons were used on scene but it is unclear what type of firearm the driver used.

Both lanes of U.S. 82 have been shut down as investigators work the scene.

The Lowndes County narcotics deputy was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle where is is expected to survive.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol, Webster’s Sheriff’s Department, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, Mathiston Police Department, and Okitbbeha County Sheriff’s Department were all involved with the incident at some point.
