Hero Down: Lowndes County Sheriff’s Deputy Levi Pettway Killed

Hayneville, AL – Lowndes County Deputy Levi Pettway was killed Monday, April 10, 2017 in an on-duty collision.

He was traveling on Alabama 21 Monday morning around 11:53 AM when his 2001 Ford Crown Victoria left the roadway and struck several trees. Responders worked to cut Deputy Pettway from his vehicle, and was pronounced dead a short time later.  According to Alabama State Troopers, Pettway was not wearing a seat belt.

“Alabama State Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on Alabama 21 in Lowndes County in the Hayneville city limits. It was a one vehicle crash involving a Lowndes County sheriff’s deputy and unfortunately, that deputy did succumb to his injuries in the crash,” said Sergeant Steve Jarrett with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, according to WSFA 12.

The cause of the collision is still not clear. “The vehicle did leave the roadway. Troopers are actively investigating the crash and we can’t comment on anything at this time until the crash investigation is complete,” Sergeant Jarrett said..

Deputy Levi Pettway, 61, was a reserve deputy with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years and was assigned to The Calhoun School as the school resource officer.

“Deputy Pettway was an outstanding contributor to the Lowndes County Public School System. He was a valuable team player. He was loved by our students, our teachers and our parents. He will truly be missed,” Lowndes County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Boyd said, according to Lowndes Signal.

“We lost one of our best deputies,” said Chief Deputy Chris West.

AL.com reports that he was a resident of Lowndesboro and is survived by his wife.
