Lawton Oklahoma Corrections Officer Shot Outside Of Home
Lawton, Oklahoma – A Lawton corrections officer was shot outside of her home as she was leaving for work Wednesday morning. It’s not clear at this time if she was targeted for being in uniform, if a former inmate was seeking retaliation, or there were other motives.
The corrections officer was shot several times and has been hospitalized in stable condition. Few additional details are available at this time. We wish her a swift recovery.
Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Joe M. Allbaugh released the following statement regarding the correctional officer from the Lawton Correctional Facility (LCF) who was shot several times outside of her home early this morning.
Director Allbaugh is on scene speaking with officials at the facility to collect more information.
An investigation into the shooting is being led by the Lawton Police Department.
As a precautionary measure, the LCF has been placed on lockdown.
“No matter if a correctional officer is with the DOC or a private facility, they are all like family,” Allbaugh said. “When something happens to one, it reverberates throughout the entire department.
“The senseless violence that happened this morning is unconscionable. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family as she recovers. We are offering our full support to them.
“Additionally, we will assist the Lawton Police Department, The GEO Group and all other entities participating in this investigation in any way we can. We will find who is behind this senseless act and ensure they are punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
The LCF is owned and operated by The GEO Group, a private prison company based in Boca Raton, Fla. The facility opened in 1998 and houses 2,624 inmates.
