Indianapolis Deputy Chief James Waters In Critical Condition

Indianapolis Deputy Chief James Waters is in critical condition following a collision on Sunday.

Indianapolis Deputy Chief James Waters Critically Injured

Plainfield, IN –  Deputy Chief James Waters of the Indianapolis Metro Police Department was seriously injured in a traffic crash on Sunday.  He remains in critical condition at this time.

The incident occurred on I-70 near the State Road 267 intersection on Sunday at around 1 PM.  Deputy Chief Waters was traveling east on I-70, when the rear of his vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer.  Police believe that he may have suffered some type of medical emergency before the crash.

An off-duty IMPD officer came upon the collision and rendered aid to Deputy Chief Waters.

Deputy Chief Waters, who is head of the Criminal Investigations Division, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to The Indy Channel.  

Chief Bryan Roach issued a statement which said:

“Our department asks for the city’s prayers for off-duty Deputy Chief of Investigation James (Jim) Waters who, after being involved in a serious auto accident, continues to receive treatment at a local hospital.” 

Deputy Chief Waters joined IMPD in 1990 as a uniformed patrol officer and was named Assistant Chief in 2014.  He was promoted to Assistant Chief of patrol in 2016, and then promoted to Chief Deputy of Investigations in 2017.

Multiple law enforcement agencies offered their prayers and well-wishes on social media.
