Palm Bay, FL – A man driving an SUV was involved in a crash that sent his vehicle over a steep embankment, leaving him entrapped in his burning car. When officers arrived on scene, they attempted to rescue the driver and got unexpected assistance from a few helpful bystanders.

Witnesses stated that they observed the driver upside down, seat belted in his vehicle, and refusing help from anyone. Once officers encountered the driver to try and help him he began to fight. Sergeant Steve Shytle of the Palm Bay Police Department said because “the gentleman fighting us we weren’t able to make it up the side of the hill up to the roadway.” Officers had to tase and handcuff the subject in order to rescue him but still couldn’t pull him up the steep embankment to safety.

As the car caught fire Police and onlookers were concerned the SUV would explode at any moment. That’s when several strangers stepped in to help pull this man to safety. These brave bystanders formed a human chain, locking arms and hands, to help pull the incoherent man up the large hill.

Shannon Perez, who caught the whole incident on camera, told local NBC news “everyone just kind of jumped in just to save this person. So it was really impressive to watch, to be a part of. You know it was a miracle and a blessing just to see the kindness and the courage involved in that, the bravery.”

The driver is being held at fault for the two-car crash and was transported to the hospital with only minor injuries. Its good to see the police and the public working together to save a mans life. Yet another reminder that when the police and the public work together, so many good things can happen.
