Officer Louis Remigio Killed
Somerville, MA – Somerville Police Officer Louis Remigio, age 55, died on Monday, October 9, from injuries he received in a motorcycle crash on Sunday. He was off-duty at the time.
Officer Remigio was riding his motorcycle on Saturday on I-95 at the Greenland-North Hampton line in New Hampshire, according to CBS Boston.
He was struck head-on by a Mercedes Benz driven by 18-year-old Michael Ricci in the southbound lanes. Witnesses reported that Ricci was racing other cars in the northbound lanes before he crossed the highway into the southbound lanes.
Ricci was arrested and is pending trial on charges of felony reckless conduct. He was released on Monday afternoon after posting $10,000 cash bond.
His arraignment on the charges is scheduled for October 20 in Rockingham County Superior Court. Ricci was arrested again on Tuesday on an unrelated, outstanding warrant. Police said that he was wanted from Lowell Juvenile Court on a probation violation from a previous case.
The New Hampshire State Police are conducting the investigation and said that additional charges may be filed.
In a Facebook post, the Somerville Police Department said:
“Officer Remigio was a 30-year veteran of the Somerville Police Department, having joined the department in March 1988. Most recently, he served in the department’s Traffic Unit.
Over his 30-year tenure, Officer Remigio received multiple awards for service to the community, including two Life-Saving Awards, a Meritorious Service Award, a Beyond the Call of Duty Award, and numerous commendations both by his colleagues and by community members.
Our hearts are with his family during this time of unimaginable loss.”
In a statement, Somerville Police Chief David Fallon said:
“Louie was a first class human being and exactly the kind of police officer you want serving your community; he was tough yet kind, empathetic, and fair. As a Chief, you always want to see that any interaction your officers have with community members are changing people’s lives for the better, and Officer Remigio embodied that one thousand percent.
“Today, our main focus is on his family, his two daughters: Alex and Danielle,his extended family, his sisters, and we’re praying for them, and support them in every way we can. That’s really our focus going forward.”
Friends of Officer Remigio’s daughters have started a GoFundMe account to help them.
On the GoFundMe page, the description about the account said, “Along with being a beloved dad, Lou was an incredible Somerville police officer…Ali and Danielle are young adults and are still grieving after losing their mother just over a year ago, and now are dealt the hand of losing their father as well. There are no words to describe the heartbreak they must be feeling.”
Officer Remigio is a 30-year veteran of the Somerville Police Department.
He is survived by two daughters, Alex and Danielle, and other family members. Officer Remigio’s wife Amy died in 2016.
