Hardeeville, SC – Hardeeville police Sergeant Kelvin Grant and Jasper County Deputy Justin Smith were shot after responding to a domestic violence call Thursday night.
According to WTOC law enforcement received a call about a possible domestic situation involving a man who was shooting at a woman.
“Just before 6 PM this afternoon, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department along with the Hardeeville Police Department responded to Sanders Road, the area we are now for a domestic situation. Just prior to our arrival we got information from our caller that the male suspect was shooting a gun at his significant other,” an official said.
Jasper County deputies and Hardeeville officers responded to the residence. Upon arrival, the suspect fired at officers, hitting Jasper County Deputy Justin Smith in the armpit/chest area. Hardeeville Sergeant Kelvin Grant was struck in the arm. Both officers were wearing their vest at the time of the shooting.
Officers returned fire and the suspect was taken into custody after his blood pressure dropped to 0. He remains deceased.
The heroes were airlifted to Memorial Health in Savannah and are listed in critical but stable condition. The female victim was transported to the hospital with injuries to her eye and gunfire burns.
Sergeant Grant is a seven year veteran of the Hardeeville Police Department. Deputy Justin Smith has been with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department for two years.
