Grand Rapids, MI – In a bizarre twist of events, an FBI special agent, Ruben Hernandez, was arrested after allegedly firing a gun multiple times outside of a Plant Fitness and when police arrived he also fired at them. The incident happened around 1:30 AM on Tuesday, on 28th Street in Grand Rapids. Reports indicate that Hernandez is from the Las Vegas area but was in Grand Rapids on business.
Police reports show that Hernandez walked into the Planet Fitness gym and was showing off a gun to several people in the gym. He then fired multiple rounds outside in the area of Lake Eastbrook Boulevard. No one in the gym was injured or threatened with the firearm but the activity did prompt a call to the Grand Rapids Police Department. When police arrived on the scene, Hernandez fired at least one round at the responding officer who is a sergeant with the department. The officer did not return fire and Hernandez was taken into custody without any loss of life.
The FBI in Detroit has released a statement pertaining to the incident: Special Agent Ray Johnson said, “The FBI is aware of some allegations against an FBI special agent in Grand Rapids. We’re committed to working with the Grand Rapids Police Department to ensure the investigation continues in a manner consistent with pursuing concerns of justice. We’ve referred our matter to the Internal Investigation section at FBI Headquarters in the Office of Inspections.”
A public search of Kent County Jail records show that Hernandez is being held in the jail and there are three pending charges. The charges are not listed until after arraignment but according to WZZM13, the charges are assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm at or near a building, and possession of a firearm while under the influence.
Alcohol appears to have played a factor in this incident and it is only by a stroke of luck that there were no injuries or deaths related to this chain of events. Whatever the motive of Special Agent Hernandez, he placed the Grand Rapids Police Sergeant in a very tough position and we are happy that this worked out for the best. Hernandez will be arraigned in court to answer for the charges he was arrested for.
