Ferndale, Michigan – A police department in Michigan has publicly called out its own officer on twitter for parking in a handicap spot while on duty.

The department took to Twitter to tell the public it was handling the situation. The Ferndale Police Department tweeted on June 29 a photo of their own police car illegally parked in a handicap spot.

In the tweet, the Ferndale department wrote, “This is not okay! This is not the way we roll! We have dealt with this!”

According to WXYZ TV, the police department said the officer pulled into the parking lot to get some coffee at a store and there wasn’t any parking spots available.

A citizen saw the police car parked in a handicap spot and took a photo of the car and posted it on social media. Ferndale Police Spokesman Sergeant Baron Brown said when the police were alerted to what happened, they took action on their own.

“It’s not in our value system to do stuff like this,” Sergeant Brown told WXYZ. “It was a hastily made, poorly made decision.”

The sergeant said he hopes other police departments will be open with the public about addressing when their own make mistakes.

“Hiding things like this sweeping them under the rug that’s not an option today,” Sergeant Brown added. “We didn’t make this publicly known for any other reason than it’s the right thing to do. I think, as time goes on, more and more police departments are going to handle things like this. We can’t hide. It happened, it was a mistake, there was no malice in the officer’s heart.”

Parking illegally in a handicap spot is a $100 fine in Ferndale, which is about 13 miles north of Detroit.

The police said they would not release information about how the officer was disciplined.
