Everett, MA Officer Shoots Man Charging At Him With Knife

A currently unidentified Everett, MA officer shot a man who charged at him with a knife. In the dramatic video, the armed suspect get within inches of the officer.

Travis Andersen of the Boston Globe Reports:

The Middlesex district attorney’s office released dramatic video footage Monday that appeared to show a knife-wielding suspect charging at an Everett police officer, who fatally shot the man in a busy intersection on the afternoon of April 21.

The shooting of Mario Mejia Martinez, 48, a Salvadoran immigrant and father of seven, was captured by surveillance cameras near 432 Broadway.

Mayor Carlo DeMaria said that the footage showed Mejia Martinez “clearly running at the officer, with the knife, intending to kill him or do him harm.”

Robert Warren, a lawyer for Mejia Martinez’s family, said Monday that relatives question whether deadly force was necessary.

Mejia Martinez was clearly attempting to murder the officer. It doesn’t get much more obvious than this. Charging full speed ahead, while obviously armed with a knife, Mejia Martinez got within inches of the officer before being dropped by the officer’s shots. Had the officer hesitated for a second, he would likely be seriously injured or dead. This warrior’s actions saved his life, and possibly the lives of others in the area.
