Wayne, MI – Two men have been arrested in a vicious attack on a retired 30-year-veteran Detroit police officer.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 23, about 2:30 AM outside of a bar near Michigan Avenue and Newberry Street, according to ClickonDetroit.  Police said that the victim, Roy Huston, age 70, was sitting outside when three men walked by.

Apparently words were exchanged, and Huston was punched, kicked, and beaten with a radio.  Residents and bar employees said that Huston lived in a retirement building behind the bar, and often sat outside with his dog listening to his radio.

Huston was transported to a local hospital, where he will likely remain for at least a week, according to his son Maurice Huston.  He said that his father was “still in pain”, and had defensive wounds to his hands and arms.  The victim was reported to have started talking for the first time since he was assaulted on Wednesday, July 26.

The suspects, Ryan Fletcher, age 35, and Jacob Rose, age 23, were arrested and have been charged with assault with intent to commit murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.  Fletcher was also charged with fourth offense habitual offender.  Their arraignment in court was held on Tuesday, July 25, and bond was set at $100,000 for each man.

A third person who was with Fletcher and Rose when the assault occurred, was initially arrested but has since been released after prosecutors declined to formally charge him.  Police said that there was no evidence that the crime was racially motivated.

Our thoughts and prayers are with retired Detroit Police Officer Roy Huston.  Get well, soon.
