Washington D.C – House democrats decided to kneel on Sunday on the house floor in protest of President Donald Trump (videos below.) They explained that their protest, which didn’t occur during the national anthem, was actually a sign of patriotism.
Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis. said that he would be taking a knee “for the America that we all aspire it to be.”
“Look, taking a knee may have started as a protest about racial inequality, about behavior by some in law enforcement discriminating against others in our country but unarmed people of color being killed simply for the color of their skin. I think today taking a knee is becoming a broader sign of patriotism and respect for our country,” Pocan said before kneeling.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, said that President Trump’s statements about kneelers was racist.
“There is no basis in the First Amendment that says you cannot kneel on the national anthem or in front of the flag.” Jackson Lee said before starting to read out loud about the First Amendment.
She then stumbled over her words as she perhaps realized that she was saying that “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech,” and nothing she read said that President Trump can’t opine that kneelers should be fired.
Jackson Lee appeared confused as she concluded, “And so you cannot abridge, by standing up with tweets.”
“That is racism. You cannot deny it, you cannot run for it,” Jackson Lee said before kneeling. “I kneel because I will stand with those young men and I’ll stand with our soldiers and I’ll stand with America because I kneel,”
Our partners at Warrior 12, who print our Blue Lives Matter shirts, have launched a limited edition pre-order Stand For The Flag shirt so that can proudly display that you don’t kneel.
