New Bulletproof Foam Destroys Bullets

North Carolina State University Professor Afsaneh Rabiei has led a team which created a new bulletproof foam.

FoxNews reports that the foam is a special type of foam called composite metal foams, or CMF. The lightweight foam is able to destroy bullets upon contact.

To put the foam to a test against bullets, the team built a bulletproof shield. The team made the shield’s strike face with the new foam and boron carbide ceramics. Behind the strike face they put a  backplate of Kevlar.

The team shot at the shield with 7.62 x 63 mm M2 armor-piercing rounds. the bullets did not penetrate the shield. The bullets only causes a 8 mm indentation on the back of the shield. The National Institute of Justice standard allows up to 44 mm indentation from a bullet on side facing the user.

Stopping bullets wasn’t the team’s first thought though. They originally tested it against radiation. The team was able to build a shield which could block gamma rays and neutron radiation.

I’m a cop, so I’m not exactly sure what that means, except that the material will prevent me from becoming a member of the Fantastic 4.

Hopefully someday soon we will have lightweight body armor that will be able to stop heavy rifle rounds.

Can you think of other potential uses for this new material? We’d like to hear your thoughts. Please let us know on our Facebook page or in the comments below.
