BREAKING:  Broward Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Assaulted During Traffic Stop, Manhunt Underway for Suspect

Broward County, FL –   A Hero Broward Sheriff’s Office Sergeant was injured during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop around 11:30 a.m. this morning.  A manhunt for the suspect is currently underway involving law enforcement officers from multiple agencies.

According to WSVN7 News, A Broward Sheriff’s Office Sergeant stopped a vehicle near the 200 block of Northwest 51st Court, which is in the Oakland Park area.  The driver of the vehicle struck the Broward Sheriff’s Office Sergeant in the face with an unknown object.  The suspect fled and a perimeter has been set up around the area.

Gina Carter, Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said that the Sergeant was taken to a local hospital with lacerations to his face and head.  According to Division Chief John Preston, Oakland Park Fire Rescue, the laceration that the Sergeant received was “four to five inches” and the Sergeant was conscious when he was transported.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office’s helicopter, K-9 , and Deputies from the Oakland Park, Deerfield Beach, and Pompano Beach districts are assisting in the manhunt.  Some local roads have been shut down and traffic is being diverted. Motorists and pedestrians have been asked to avoid the area.

No description of the suspect has been released yet.  The identity of the fallen Hero Broward Sheriff’s Office Sergeant has also not been released yet although his injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
