Video: Albuquerque Police Shooting Of Robert Savelli

Albuquerque, NM –  The Albuquerque Police Department released body-cam video on Wednesday, August 2, that shows a suspect suddenly turning towards an officer with a gun. The officer responded with appropriate force, fatally shooting the suspect down.

The incident occurred on Monday night at Vassar and Menaul NE, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

Albuquerque Police Officer Jon O’Guin attempted to stop a moped that didn’t have a license plate, that was being driven by Robert Savelli, age 43.

O’Guin continued to drive north and refused to stop, according to Albuquerque Police Officer and spokesman Tanner Tixier.

Officer O’Guin blocked the moped with his cruiser, and Savelli got off of the moped and fled on foot north.  Surveillance video showed Officer O’Guin park his cruiser and start in foot pursuit of Savelli.  His body-cam video clearly shows that Savelli was armed with a gun and had started to turn toward him when Officer O’Guin fired.

Celina Espinoza, Albuquerque Police spokeswoman, said “As you will see he had split milliseconds to react to the suspect’s actions.”

In the body-cam video, Officer O’Guin can be seen continuing to react properly to the threat by keeping his firearm pointed at Savelli, while other officers responded to assist.  He also commanded Savelli multiple times not to reach for his gun.

Savelli had several warrants out for his arrest, and methamphetamine was found in his possession afterward.  No one important was injured during the incident.

Police officers are put into positions where they just have a split-second reaction time to make life or death decisions. This incident happened so fast, blink and you’ll miss it.
