UPDATE: Dallas Police Officer Shot In Oregon, Suspect Dead

Dallas, OR –  A Dallas Police Department Hero was shot last night during what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop and is recovering today.  The suspect who shot the fallen Officer was shot and killed during the incident.

According to news sources, three Dallas police Officers stopped a vehicle around 5:45 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016, on suspicion that the driver was Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII).  The traffic stop occurred in the Dallas, Oregon, Walmart parking lot.  Capt. Bill Fugate of the Oregon State Police said that “they were investigating the male for a DUII related incident when the incident escalated.”  One Dallas Police Officer was shot in the leg by the suspect.  Officers returned fire and the suspect was shot and killed.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fallen Hero Dallas Police Officer was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.  A person who was shopping at the Walmart told news sources that the business went into lockdown during the incident.  It is not known how long the lockdown lasted but it has since been lifted.  After the incident, the Walmart, located on NE Kings Valley Highway, remained closed.

The Oregon State Police are conducting the investigation at the request of Dallas Police Chief Tom Simpson and Polk County District Attorney Aaron Felton.  The OSP is being assisted with the investigation by the Grande Ronde Tribal Police, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Monmouth, Independence and Salem Police Departments and Dallas Fire and EMS.  Lt. Bob Charpentier of the Oregon State Police held a press conference last night.  He did not release the name of the fallen Dallas Police Officer out of privacy for the family.  The names of the two other Dallas Police Officers who were involved were not released.  The suspect’s name was also not released.  Lt. Charpentier said all names would be released later “when it was appropriate” but that this was an ongoing investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the fallen Hero Dallas Police Officer, his family, and his family in blue.  We wish him a speedy recovery.
