Trinity Professor Johnny Eric Williams Facing Backlash Over Comments

Hartford, CT – Public outrage continues to grow over Facebook posts from Sunday, June 18, where Trinity College professor Johnny Eric Williams ‘labeled white people’ “fucking assholes,” and approved the idea that first responders should have let Representative Stephen Scalise and others die during the Alexandria Congressional baseball practice shooting, according to Fox News Insider.

The sociology professor’s comments caused such a firestorm that Joanne Berger-Sweeney, President of Trinity College, closed the campus on Wednesday, June 21 because of the threats, according to Hartford Courant.

Williams, who had already fled the campus with his family, issued a public statement on Thursday, June 22, as the campus re-opened.  He said that his remarks were misinterpreted, saying that he was not calling for the deaths of white people but instead a discussion about racial issues, and blames the outrage on people trying to prevent others from speaking out about white supremacy.

He also complained about the reaction to his comments, and the effect he said the reaction was having on his family.

Williams, a sociology professor, posted the hashtag #LetThemFuckingDie below his hate-filled, violent, racist comments against white people.

His comments were posted in response to an article entitled “Let Them Fucking Die”, from Mediumwhich was written on Friday, June 16.  The story is filled with examples of where white people should be left for dead due to racial injustices, and said that hero police officer Crystal Grinet should have let Rep. Steve Scalise die.

One quote from the article reads, “If you see them drowning, if you see them in a burning building… if they are in a park and they turn their weapons on each other, do nothing.  Let them fucking die.” The author of that article was anonymous.

In his comments, Williams said, “It is past time for the racially oppressed to do what people who believe themselves to be ‘white’ will not do – put end to the vectors of their destructive mythology of whiteness and their white supremacy system.”

He said that he is “fed the fuck up with self-identified white’s daily violence directed at immigrants, Muslim, and sexually and racially oppressed people. The time is now to confront these inhuman assholes and end this now.”

On his own Facebook page, Williams posted,“It is patently clear we black folks in U.S. have no rights that the white supremacy governing apparatus is willing to protect”, according to Campus Reform.

All of the posts have either been removed or locked to prevent further access.  In a statement, Trinity President Berger-Sweeney said, “I denounce hate speech in all its forms, I will explore all options to resolve this matter, and I will be back in touch with our community members with our decisions.”

The Hartford Police Department is conducting the investigation into the death threats against Williams, and is providing “enhanced” security at Trinity College.
