Suspect Who Tried To Shoot Two San Jose Cops Has Been Captured

A suspect opened fire on two San Jose cops Sunday night and then fled, prompting a massive manhunt for the would-be killer. Now, San Jose police believe that they have captured this would-be killer.

Luis Enrique Soriano, 20, of San Jose, was arrested on Thursday for the shooting.

“We’re extremely confident we have the person responsible for this reprehensible act against our officers,” Chief Eddie Garcia told the media at a press conference. “We would have gone to the ends of the Earth to find this person.”

The initial incident occurred when at around 7:35 PM Sunday, two San Jose Police Department officers were on foot patrol by Luby and Ripley drives when they attempted contact with a group of men. The group fled from the police officers and one of the suspects turned and opened fire on the officers. The heroes refused to return fire because of the number of innocent people who could potentially be hit by stray bullets. The officers got to cover and avoided being shot.

Lt. Eddie Pedreira told NBC Bay Area, “They did find cover. The officers did not have a good field of fire, so they did not, rightly so, return fire, as we do not practice shooting indiscriminately,” Pedreira said. “Even when someone is shooting at us, we have to ensure there’s a proper and safe backdrop, unlike the suspect who randomly shot several rounds.”

Luis Enrique Soriano is a gang member who was on probation at the time of the shooting. He has been booked into jail on two counts of attempted murder.
