Forest Lake PD K9 Ranger Died

Forest Lake, MN – Forest Lake Police K9 Ranger died on Tuesday night, February 7, 2017, after a medical emergency that occurred after a suspect apprehension.

K9 Ranger was assisting the Minnesota State Patrol with a high-risk traffic stop about 11:30 PM when the suspect resisted arrest. The suspect was wearing a bandana over his face, refused to follow police commands, and was trying to restart his vehicle and drive away.

K9 Ranger was deployed by his handler, Forest Lake Police Officer Nick Kent, and detained the suspect, who was not identified.  Moments later, K9 Ranger collapsed after having some type of  “cardiac event” .  He was rushed to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital, where attempts to resuscitate with CPR were not successful.  K9 Ranger died at the veterinary hospital, according to KARE11.

K9 Ranger was a nine-year-old German Shepherd, and a seven-year veteran of the Forest Lake Police Department.  Sergeant Mark Richert said that K9 Ranger “will always be remembered fondly by the thousands of kids and citizens whose lives he touched over the years at numerous demonstrations, events, and tours, while feared by those who made the mistake of committing a criminal act.”

We send our thoughts and prayers to FLPD K9 Handler Nick Kent, the Forest Lake Police Department and the city of Forest Lake, in the loss of K9 Ranger.

Thank you for your service, K9 Ranger.

I was blessed with meeting Officer Kent and K9 Ranger while I attended Forest Lake High School. After meeting both of them I decided to pursue a career in law enforcement and I hope to get on a K9 unit. Officer Kent and the rest of FLPD, your community and the neighboring communities feel your pain. God bless both of you. Rest In Piece Ranger.
