Christopher Garza Shot A Hutchinson County Deputy

Fritch, TX – A Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Deputy has been shot Thursday evening following a day-long manhunt for a man who fired at a deputy the day before.

According to KFDA the manhunt began after a Wednesday afternoon traffic stop.  Hutchinson County Sheriff Kirk Coker believed Christopher Garza was involved in a shooting that took place when he initiated a traffic stop on his vehicle around 3:30 PM on Wednesday.  Garza fled and fired multiple shots out of his window as police pursued, striking Sheriff Coker’s Tahoe.

Multiple agencies were involved in the pursuit and retreated to a safe distance after shots were fired by Christopher Garza.  They maintained a safe distance and began to establish a perimeter, Garza was able to elude them.  His vehicle was later found in the 700 block of Bryan Street.

According to Borger Police Department Captain Brandon Strope, law enforcement were attempting to locate and serve an arrest warrant on Christopher Garza on Thursday, with charges including first-degree felony offense of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a peace officer.  The Borger Police Department, Randall County Tactical Team, Texas Department of Public Safety, Borger Fire Department and Hutchinson County HD EMS all assisted in the search.  Garza was spotted along SH-136 on Thursday afternoon.

Law enforcement attempted to engage him around Arroyo Verde Drive, just outside of Fritch.  One Hutchinson County Deputy was shot during the incident and life-lined to Northwest Texas Hospital with what are believed to be survivable injuries.  Borger police and Hutchinson County deputies were all involved in the shooting, Garza was pronounced dead at the scene.  The Texas Rangers have taken over the investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Deputy and his family.
