Police K9 Blu Shot

Elk Grove, CA –   An Elk Grove Police K9, whose name is Blu, was shot Saturday night during a gunfight after an armed robbery at a popular shopping center. Three suspects are now in custody.

According to CBS Sacramento, Elk Grove Police Officers and the K9 responded to a call of a reported armed robbery at the Jamba Juice located at the Laguna Gateway Plaza near West Stockton Blvd.  The incident occurred on Saturday night about 8:30 PM.  When Officers arrived, both suspects fled.

The two suspects were spotted by an Elk Grove Officer and K9 Blu on West Stockton Road, according to the Elk Grove Citizen.  When the Officer tried to stop them, both suspects then ran toward a parked car on Dunisch Road. The Officer deployed K9 Blu when the suspects fled.  Both suspects began shooting at K9 Blu, who was struck twice, and then at the Officer, who returned fire. One suspect, Luther Foster, age 45, of Sacramento, was arrested at that time.

A manhunt for the second male suspect began, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and the Sacramento Police Department.  A perimeter was established and the second male suspect was located a short time later. He is a 17-year-old juvenile and was taken into custody around 9:40 PM according to KCRA 3.  Both male suspects were wounded during the shootout and were taken to a local hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

A third suspect, Shantel Williams, age 41, of Elk Grove, was found in a vehicle nearby.  She was determined to be involved in the armed custody and is also in custody.  The amount of money that was stolen has not been disclosed. The two adult suspects are now in custody at the local jail and the juvenile was sent to Juvenile Hall.

The wounded Elk Grove K9 Blu was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment. He is believed to have suffered non-life threatening injuries and is recovering at the veterinary hospital.

After the incident, while the crime scene was being processed, two loaded handguns were found in a nearby field. They were seized as part of the investigation, according to Fox40.  The nearby roads and parking lot were closed for several hours but have since re-opened.  The Elk Grove Police Officer who was involved in the shooting is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Our thoughts and prayers are with fallen Hero Elk Grove K9 Blu.  We wish him a speedy recovery.  We are also grateful that no other Officers were injured.
