Suspect Disarmed Officer, Used Gun To Murder Man

New York, NY – Early Tuesday morning, a Bronx man pulled an officer’s gun out of its holster and started shooting, killing another man.

The suspect, Efraim Guzman, 30, was able to fire all 15 rounds in the gun as he was shot twice by officers. Guzman was arrested and transported to the hospital where he is in stable condition.

One of Guzman’s bullets hit and killed Wali Camara, 49, as an officer tried to defend him.

Police officers were initially called to the scene after Guzman and Camara had gotten into a dispute at the store where Camara works. Camara kicked Guzman out of the store, and Guzman crossed the street to another store. Camara followed him to warn the other store’s workers that Guzman was being disorderly. A fight broke out between Guzman and the store employees, and the police were called.

Police officers arrived and were escorting Guzman away when Guzman grabbed the officer’s holstered gun, drew it, and opened fire on Camara. The fatal shot hit Camara in the groin. The officer that was standing by Camara returned fire, shooting Guzman three times, hitting him twice.

NY Post reports that Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins said that it is not likely the disarmed officer will be punished.

“This happens. Cops have guns taken from them in the commission of dealing with violent people all over the country. Thank god the police officer didn’t get killed with gun,” said Mullins.

Guzman had 10 prior arrests on his criminal history, including criminal mischief, assault, and burglary. He will now face a long list of new felony charges including murder.

Every encounter that a police officer makes can potentially turned into an encounter with an armed suspect, because the officer always brings a gun. Unfortunately, Guzman was able to go from being an unarmed disorderly suspect to an armed killer in an instant.

Take this in the spirit intended – I’m sure the officer who had his gun taken would rather be dead than an innocent victim in a case like this. I would.
