Edgewater Police Corporal Michael Nesbitt In Critical Condition After Fight With DUI Suspect

Edgewater Corporal Michael Nesbitt In Critical Condition

Edgewater, CO – Edgewater Police Corporal Michael Nesbitt remains in critical condition after a chase and fight with a DUI suspect, Connor Dougherty, according to The Denver Channel.

In addition to being seriously injured by the suspect, Corporal Nesbitt suffered a heart attack, resulting in respiratory and cardiac arrest during the physical altercation with Dougherty, age 26, according to The Denver Post.

The incident occurred early Friday morning, June 23, about 2 AM.  Officers tried to stop Dougherty, who was on a motorized scooter, for suspicion of DUI.  He refused to stop, and led officers on a brief chase until he wrecked in a parking lot at Jefferson High School, located at 2305 Pierce Street.

In a statement, Edgewater police said that Dougherty then fought with officers who were trying to arrest him.  Corporal Nesbitt was ‘seriously injured’ during that fight, and was transported to Lutheran Hospital by paramedics for treatment, according to KDVR.  He is in the ICU.

Dougherty was also injured, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.   He was later released, and was charged with several charges including second degree assault of a peace officer.
