Detroit Firefighter Fired Over Watermelon

Detroit, MI – A Detroit probationary firefighter has been fired after he brought a watermelon to the station.

Second Battalion Chief Shawn McCarty said that it was tradition among firehouses to bring a gift as an introduction to fellow firefighters, according to Fox2Detroit.

He said, “It’s not mandatory, it’s voluntary. You come in bearing gifts. The usual gift is doughnuts but you are allowed to bring whatever you want to bring in.”

On September 30, Robert Pattison, age 41, brought a watermelon wrapped with a pink ribbon, to Engine 55, which is 90% black.

Several black firefighters at Engine 55, located at Joy and Southfield, said that they were “instantly offended.”

Patrick Trout, who is a firefighter at Engine 55, said, “When you get your first detail at a firehouse you pretty much know what you are getting yourself into.  So you would have to say it was probably a bad call.”

Fox2 asked Chief McCarty if it “was racially insensitive to bring a watermelon into a fire house”.  He replied, “to some people.”

Pattison told Fox2 that he never intended it to be a joke, and that he never meant to offend the firefighters he was supposed to work with.

Fire Commissioner Eric Jones said that Pattison had been “officially discharged.”

He said, “There is zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior inside the Detroit Fire Department. On Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at Engine 55, a trial firefighter (probationary employee) engaged in unsatisfactory work behavior which was deemed offensive and racially insensitive to members of the Detroit Fire Department.”

“After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the best course of action was to terminate the employment of this probationary employee.”

Fox 2 asked Chief McCarty if Pattison “should have lost his job over a watermelon?”

Chief McCarty said, “I don’t think so.  Between what he did and what was there are a few things that could have been done.”

Good call. Weed out the troublemakers before they can even put their shit down.

    • CottonPickenChickeneatin

If I were that guy I’d open up a donut shop and supply that station with free donuts for life until they all die of coronary atery disease.

      • Highest common denominator

Firefighters actually have to be in shape though. You’re likely to kill cops that way, easily.

        • CottonPickenChickeneatin

I’ve seem some beefy firemen also. I will admit I’ve seen more beefy policemen than firemen on average. Watermelon is much healthier than donuts are, which are not healthy in the least. But that racist guy just wanted to bait them into eating healthy. How dare that fucker. No wonder they fired him. They should fire all white people in all workplaces for no reason at all. Then, we can sit back and enjoy the free Obummercare and Gubmint cheese like the rest of you people.

          • Highest common denominator

ah, so you’re one of those cracker-ass crackers that think blacks are the main usurpers of government handouts. well, blacks aren’t. white women certainly are though.

    • LEO

It’s a good call should you be an overly sensitive black person, which most of you are. I’ll bet you’re the type to secretly consume watermelon on a hot summer day. Tell the truth now.

      • Highest common denominator

I eat watermelon in the summer because it’s refreshing.

        • CottonPickenChickeneatin

Would you be offended if I bought you a watermelon?

          • Highest common denominator

            You specifically? Definitely.

If I’m having a cookout and someone brings a watermelon, that’s totally appropriate. This guy knew what he was doing, playing dumb doesn’t help your case.

        • LEO

But, I thought that was racist? It’s all so very confusing.

          • Highest common denominator

          • LEO

From ABC = “The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average.” I’m sure those scores were brought down by those pushing diversity in policing. Mine was tested at 127 when I was hired. How about you Lowest common denominator?

          • Calistress

LOL – that study must have been conducted by LEO. Along the same lines of, “We’ve investigated ourselves and found ourselves to be innocent of all wrong doing.”

          • LEO

Feel free to do your own research to prove me wrong. I doubt you will because most of you deal only with emotion, not facts. It’s a trait you all were born with.

          • Calistress

No – I deal in truth.

The truth is, people successfully hired as cops are selected by their inability to think independently and logically. The reason police departments remain the most significant gang in America is that law enforcement employs immoral thugs who do not question unconstitutional directives.

So, on average, LEO’s are mid to lower IQ and are more comfortable as group-thinkers.

          • LEO

Hahahaha…and your research for this opinion comes from where? Your thinking on this matter is not supported by fact. Remember, Google is your friend. LOL!!!!

          • Calistress

You obviously don’t read nor do you know how to research,. I’m not required to provide you with links. As you said, “Google is your friend.”

          • LEO

I provided factual information in previous posts with direct quotes from the articles. You simply regurgitate stuff you’ve heard on the “screets” Like I said, if you’re going to make statements as if it was fact, you should provide direct quotes or a source where you obtained the information. Otherwise, it’s simply your opinion and you know what they say about that, right?

          • JBo

I think that was on the last job application that I saw advertised…”The successful applicant will not be able to think logically or independently and must be an immoral thug. Failure to question unconstitutional directives is a plus.”

          • Calistress

You must be a cop then. Sounds like you fit the bill. So, how many citizens have you abused because you have a tin badge?

  • Jessica Renick

What is so wrong about a fruit? Im being serious. Its just a fruit.

    • Alyssa Dawson

Seriously? Maybe he could have brought along a bucket of fried chicken as well, huh? The racist connotations are well known. What watermelon symbolizes: https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2012/12/26/slavery-and-the-watermelon/

        • LEO

As someone else noted, this is why it’s difficult to take black people seriously. You all are too easily offended. You’re almost as bad as democrats.

          • Jonas Blane ll

I appreciate what you said. You just proved my point.

          • LEO

            Whatever…dude.

      • Peter Rose

So watermelons are inherently racist now? Unless he did it in a way that was purposefully meant to be offensive, it’s just a fucking watermelon. So If I treat my coworkers to KFC the black ones can get offended and have me fired?

        • Calistress

          Are you seriously this dense?

      • jackfesperman

I am white and have been eating watermelon for over 60 years and I would bet more white people like watermelon than black people. Pure BS to say this is racist. So I guess if a black firefighter brings in a box of crackers then they should be fired for offending white firefighters. So sick of EVERYTHING being considered racist.

        • JBo

          Priceless!

        • Ferd Matula

          You can’t fix stupid !!!!!

        • Highest common denominator

Well tell the Whites stop doing racist shit then.

          • jackfesperman

If you think white people eating watermelon is racist then you have a very shallow mind and people like you are the problem.

          • Highest common denominator

It’s not racist to eat watermelon, it’s delicious. Bringing watermelon into a black fire station is dumb, and this guy sounds like a troublemaker. He won’t work well with the team, so cut him off swiftly.

          • jackfesperman

It is only dumb when people are looking for something to complain about. Do white firefighters complain if a black firefighter brings a box of “crackers” to work? This crap is only racist when the weak minded want to make it that way.

          • Highest common denominator

Has a black man bought crackers to work? If so, you’d have a point.

          • jackfesperman

In fact yes, I was a firefighter for over 10 years (and God forbid) but we had watermelon at work and yes most of the guys I worked with (white & black) but we only saw each other as our firefighter brothers brought crackers to work to eat. Of course thank goodness we did not look at our food as being racist.

          • Highest common denominator

Maybe you’re different. Not all of you are bad.

This guy sounds like a troublemaker. Good on them.

          • knight2k

“Not all of you are bad.” That right there is racist af.

          • Highest common denominator

How is that racist? Some are bad, some arent. Stop being so sensitive.

          • kittykat01

Look to your own words on sensitivity. You are very ummmm racist

          • Highest common denominator

No I’m not. You’re too sensitive. Woman up.

          • Fire_and_Steel

If he did, the best thing to do would be to say thanks, pour him a cup of coffee, and break out a block of sharp cheddar cheese to go with the crackers. (As long as nobody minds sharp white cheddar.)
“[M]isunderstandings and neglect occasion more mischief in the world than even malice and wickedness. At all events, the two latter are of less frequent occurrence.”–von Goethe
In other words, it’s more likely that not enough forethought (“could this offend anyone?”) went into the watermelon “gift” than too much forethought (malice). https://quoteinvestigator.com/2016/12/30/not-malice
And y’know, sometimes if you find malice in everything people say or do, you encourage the ones who really are trying to be a-holes.

          • Donna Cassidy

yea a matter fact they have..along with cheese and ham..so we could have cracker sandwiches…I will tell you something you can call me “honky” cracker, whatever you want just don’t call me late for dinner

I love when racist whites are intentionally offensive and then pretend to be utterly baffled when you call them out on their crap.

Either these people commenting that the watermelon was ONLY fruit and was not a stereotypically offensive “gift”, gives truth to the studies that only low IQ people are hired as cops, or they are lying as to the inappropriateness of the watermelon “gift”.

          • Ronnie

Stop perpetually killing, raping and robbing.

          • LEO

When a gift of a watermelon becomes a racist symbol to the black race you all can no longer be taken seriously. You’re as bad as the liberal snowflakes who are offended by damn near everything.

          • Highest common denominator

It never ceases to amaze me how cracker-ass crackers like to tell others how to think.

          • LEO

Why? You come to this site and frequently tell us how we’re suppose to think. Hmm! Also I see you are now resorting to using racial slurs to describe white people. It’s really funny how it’s okay for you to make bigoted comments while you throw a hissy fit over a watermelon gift. You sensitive little snowflake, you…hahahaha

          • Highest common denominator

That’s incorrect. I do come here and express my own opinion, which regularly offends you rather easily.

Second off, I’m not calling all white people cracker-ass crackers, because most whites are just fine. But racist white people? Definitely cracker-ass crackers. If you’re offended, then that’s you. Hit dogs holler.

          • LEO

So you’re like those white people who call blacks n*****ers who justify the use of the word by claiming it’s not all blacks who are n****ers, just the ones who routinely commit thuggery. Now we know the type of person you are. Well done, sport.

It’s an EVIL fruit! We should eradicate watermelon the world over in order to protect those who are offended by this evil and wicked fruit! (Sarcasm intended.)

          • richardstarr

No, that is NOT what I said.
There is an unfortunate association that one has to be a ware of in order to avoid
potentially making people unhappy when it can be avoided. I’m sure there is more
to the story here, but I’m waiting to hear it.

          • NebraskaFilly

Oooooh!!! Can’t make people unhappy now, can we? THIS IS LUDICROUS!!!!

          • richardstarr

When it comes to a working environment in the public sector where workers can sue for, and win, millions paid for by the taxpayers, sadly, no we can’t.

          • NebraskaFilly

Hopefully, that will begin to change once PDJT gets his judicial appointments through.

          • richardstarr

Lawsuits are generally at the state level, so unlikely to make a difference.

          • Windrider_HD

Bad little black kids. No excuse for perpetrating a racial stereotype.

          • Katrina

Does that make sneakers racist? A lot of black kids like to steal them, too. This entire “racist” and “offended” thing has gotten out of hand. Anyone can be offended by anything. That doesn’t make that “thing” wrong. It means the offended person has a big imagination or thin skin. We are becoming a nation of sissies and four year olds. Grow up, America!

      • SteppyJ412

Watermelon is great, so is fried chicken. But watermelon travels better.
Stop being offended by people bringing you food. Be happy like everyone else.

      • JBo

If you don’t like watermelon…don’t eat watermelon. Other people like watermelon…let them eat watermelon. (And I like fried chicken too!)

      • Windrider_HD

Seriously? The connotations are well known as a gimmick for those looking for something to complain about. They fired the wrong ones

      • sickntired

How about maybe he wanted to share something healthier than donuts and brought fresh fruit, instead. I love fresh watermelon. People need to stop being so friggen sensitive and stop making EVERYTHING about race.

        • Calistress

Then why watermelon? Why not apples, peaches, pears, pineapples, oranges? You know exactly what this guy was doing.

          • sickntired

Maybe, he passed someone selling watermelon on the side of the road. When they are in season here you can get a nice large one for $3, that would let everyone in the firehouse have a slice. After all , he did just start the job, maybe he couldn’t afford to get everyone apples, peaches, pineapples or oranges.

          • Calistress

            Ok – go with that.

          • sickntired

I guess I could be a A$$ and assume that he would intentionally insult a group of people he would be working with. Being offended by a fruit … bunch of morons are offended by some fruit.

          • Calistress

How dare victims are offended by a racist.

      • bannedbymotherjones✓ᴰᴱᴾᴸᴼᴿᴬᴮᴸᴱ

Connotations? Dear God, you leftists will do mental gymnastics to find something to be offended about. It’s a watermelon which is a delicious and healthy fruit – moreover it’s a very refreshing thing to have after firefighting training or a firefighting call.

      • Calistress

Yep – but it’s interesting how these folks are acting clueless about the insensitivity involved here. Especially given the fact that donuts are traditional why then would this white guy bring watermelon to the station?

        • LEO

You’re such a sensitive little snowflake, aren’t you?

          • Calistress

Geez pig -can you be more original?

          • LEO

            You mean like you? Lol

        • Katrina

I guess a smart person would ask the only person who knows why he made that decision. That would be the man who brought it. By assigning your interpretation to him without even knowing him, you show yourself to be the racist one.

      • Jessica Garis

Seriously? Maybe it was the only thing left in his garden and all he had to give. My next door neighbors never complained about it when I have them watermelons. They grew so well that we always had some to give. Their 3 little girls loved them-especially the ”special ones” which were sweet and yellowish-orange and had very few seeds. I never once thought about the racial connotations (perhaps because I wasn’t raised that way.) and my black neighbors were never anything but appreciative. I am thankful they don’t teach those beautiful little girls to be as ignorant as those full grown fire fighters.
        Watermelon is food, not symbolism.

    • billpayor

Seriously, I’m so white I glow in the dark and I love watermelon. Very few store do not have watermelon year round, whole and cut. I would kill for some that actually tasted like watermelon instead of just water! And the other comments?? Fried chicken is only for blacks? What about black-eyed peas? Cornbread? Why isn’t food just food? You people need to get over yourself!!

      • Ben

Anyone from the South probably grew up with black-eyed peas, cornbread, and fried chicken – and watermelon! Skin color has nothing to do with it.

      • jennifer 0.2

can I bring a roasted pig to a cops retirement party?

        • The Real Walt Kovacs

Sounds delicious! I’m sure they’d love it.

        • JBo

          I’m all for that…great food!

        • Harvey CathynDee James

pretty comm0n down here- pig pickins fine dining

  • duder1897

Bad choice. He should have brought fried chicken.

  • Angry American

My wife eats watermelon all summer! STOP BEING SO DAMN SENSITIVE! By the way, did they throw the melon away or eat it?

  • Angry American

I hope none of those poor sensitive pricks are smokers! Tobacco should be racially insensitive too!

  • SteppyJ412

It’s been hot in Detroit, watermelon is awesome.
    Not seeing the problem.

  • stxpx

This is ridiculous. A couple of nights ago, I attended a small meeting in my neighbor’s home. The host served a variety of snacks – spring rolls, popcorn, watermelon, cookies, etc. Her family and three people in attendance are black; one person is asian, one from the dominican republic, and three of us are white. We all enjoyed the food. Would the neighbor’s husband have been fired if he had brought the watermelon on his first day to the firehouse where I work, if he was hired there? Detroit’s reaction to this snack, which is really just a quasi-hazing tradition (people only know to bring a gift if they’re in the good ol’ boy club), is beyond idiotic. I hope he sues for reverse discrimination to force their hand.

  • TruthSeeker

Ridiculous. Unless they proved intent he should not have been fired.

  • Diana Drum

How freaking CLUELESS!!! I always bring a cold watermelon or cantelope or ice cream to the guys at waste disposal in the summer because it’s HOT outside…and baked goodies in the winter when it’s COLD. …and the guys are mostly white and a couple of black guys…so what?? Don’t us white people eat watermelon too? Ridiculous.
It’s the thought that counts.. and kindness should never be questioned.

    • John Jameson

“It’s the thought that counts.. and kindness should never be questioned”, You could not have said it better.

  • JBo

Now people are being offended by foods? Being offended has become a national pastime and the common sense train has run way off the rails.

    • Highest common denominator

you’re right. I wish people would stop being offended over a song and flag as well.

  • Dennis Haas

The real question should be why do we have a fire station that is 90% black? Sounds like this fire stations needs some racial diversity.

  • LEO

We have to be the most sensitive country in the world. Blacks will find racism in just about anything.

  • Will Draughon

    This is absolutely ludicrous!

  • krjfla

I’m SOooooo disappointed in society these days. Come on people…rise above the *stupid* mentality. What has happened to society in the past 9 years? 🙁

  • Ben

Dumb firefighters. Taking a watermelon as being racist! I suppose if the firefighter had brought doughnuts in with white icing he would have still been a racist. Personally, with attitudes like that, and being white, I might have some misgivings about working at that fire station…wondering who would have my back…

    • JBo

Doughnuts? On no! That would make you pro police and anti BLM…in other words…racist!

  • Highest common denominator

I love the white people playing dumb on this one.

  • CottonPickenChickeneatin

After they fired the guy, I’ll bet you a million dollars they devoured that fucking watermelon!

  • richardstarr

Surely there is more to the story?
I know that if I did something that in hindsight was considered offensive I’d apologize and try and make up for it.
I personally love watermelon, but I also understand the unfortunate negative associations and I would have thought
that anyone living in that region would be aware.

    • Calistress

He was aware. That’s why he was fired.

      • richardstarr

Evidence that he was aware, and not just stupid, please.

      • Katrina

You really should have a good paying job at an investigative agency where your psychotic abilities could be put to good use. Oops. I meant psychic.

  • Rosalie Dwyer-Huebener

I really thought we had become better than thinking watermelon is racist. He should not have lost his job unless there was a lot more going on.

    • Highest common denominator

      We?

I wonder when white people will stop thinking what they think is the only right way to think.

  • Glenn

pure racist stupidity! Wrong, wrong, wrong!!!

    • Highest common denominator

You’re right. He should have brought something else.

      • JBo

        Crackers!

  • This is stupid! I worked on my grandparents farm & sold truckloads of watermelons every year. All races bought watermelon.

  • Doug’n Mary Stanley

    What bullshit.

  • Dennis Schmidt

So, am I supposed assume Watermelon is racist?…….I love Watermelon, Can I still be called white?

    • JBo

If you love watermelon…you’re racist! 🙂

      • Dennis Schmidt

Well, I aint giving up watermelon!……..I guess I’ll need to get fitted for my hood then.

        • JBo

In that case, you know that chocolate chip cookies definitely warrant a firing squad.

  • John Jameson

They are calling Robert Pattison a racist for bringing a watermelon as a gift, seems to me that the 95%, were looking for any reason to not have a white person working where they work. Hmm, seems like the pot is calling the kettle black.

    • Highest common denominator

They have whites there. Smarter than this guy. He’s either dumb, or playing dumb. Neither makes a good teammate.

  • marylou

They were looking for an excuse/any excuse would do…to fire this white man…
Please note that the firehouse is 90 % black…and they don’t want any “white affirmative” action! Black Racism…pure and simple!

    • Highest common denominator

Haha, stop making up terms. White affirmative action?

    • jennifer 0.2

Why would there be “White” affirmative action anyways?

    • Calistress

You’ve just answered the question so many of your white clueless commenters are asking. “Why is the watermelon offensive? Answer: The firehouse is 90% black and because of the racist, offensive, ads going back to the mid-1860’s depicting caricatures of black’s and watermelons. It’s as offensive as ads that depicted the Irish as perpetual drunkards, Jewish people as thieves, et. al.

  • Glad2breb

Really, this is too ridiculous to be for real. He probably did himself a favor. Who would want to work fires with stupid people?

  • Windrider_HD

How about firing the tender idiots who were offended. Unbelievable. I hope he sues the pants off the city.

  • sickntired

The only racists are the idiots that are offended over a watermelon! OMG I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like watermelon and they are in season!!

  • GingerCat

This is just plain stupid. “Offended” by fruit? They should be more offended by doughnuts, because the fruit is actually healthier to eat than doughnuts. Just when you think the perpetually offended can’t be any more ridiculous, well….. here they come again.

  • Angela

They are just a bunch of snowflake whiny babies.

  • jennifer 0.2

“After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the best course
of action was to terminate the employment of this probationary
    employee.”

Chief could’ve fired him with no reason at all, if he wanted to.

  • Brian Nicholson

    Stupid PC snowflake nonsense

  • Robert Pattison should sue the city of Detroit. Oh… wait… they got no money. Am I the ONLY one who is over this double standard bull that is going on? I am so fed up with it… I could spit black eyed peas out of my ears. Randy McDaniels, TLC.

  • Patrice Riedel

Is there anything that is not offensive to u people. The list is probably short. It getting freaking ridiculous. Grow up

  • TJ Berry

    Everyone loves watermelon wtf

  • TJ Berry

Now this would call for a protest how about a black firemen had brought the watermelon to the fire house.would he have been treated the same

  • AuteursRevenge

So can I bring a roasted pig to a cops retirement party?

    • JBo

I’m absolutely OK with that. BBQ and pork. Great food!

    • Katrina

We’ve actually had a pig roast and it was well received. Must be because no one was digging to the bottom of the barrel to find something they could claim offended them. Also because all in attendance were mature adults and not attention seekers.

  • Blacks.

  • Ronda Wells

Well lets hope no black fireman ever brings cheese and crackers to that firehouse!

  • Peekin-In

I hope he took his watermelon and went home. It’s so stupid I can’t believe it.

  • Peekin-In

They didn’t say what race Pattison was………was he black? Would that have been ok then to bring a watermelon? Did the pink ribbon offend the “men”? Did he even know how many white/black men worked there? Why is it OK for a black to call another the N word but not for a white. Rappers use that term all the time and call the women bitches….. Hypocrites, all the complainers. I’m so sick and tired of how the black man or woman is offended by whites.

  • Steve O

So the fact that I eat watermelon every day throughout the summer is now offensive to SOME people? Are they also offended by toast and coffee because I have those daily as well. Bringing steak okay? Give me a break. Those people who were offended should have been put on admi istrative leave.

  • Ellen del Valle

This is nuts. Watermelon is great. And easy. What. No bananas. No pineapples. No cherries. No waterever 👨🏼‍🚒. This has gotten out of control

  • Alex Macdonell

    HAHAHAHAHA

  • Jane Betts

We don’t know the whole story. Perhaps the white guy was stirring up trouble by bringing the watermelon. Will we ever know the truth? The hate has to stop!

  • Rixa Pirata

Sounds like they did him a favor…..saved him from having to work in a place that whips out the race card over a piece of fruit. Fuck that shit….peace out bitches!!

  • Laura Mullen

Read about the guy who fired him being sued 7 previous times: http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2015/10/new_detroit_fire_commissioner.html

  • Sunshine

I hope he sues for wrongful termination, bet he’d win. A watermelon…..are you serious!?!?!?!?!?

  • Chip Clarke

So, what happened to the watermelon? Was it consumed, discarded, given back to the probie, donated to a homeless shelter?

  • Donna Cassidy

what did he do throw it at someone? Because it sure in the heck can’t be the fact of bringing a watermelon to the station. IF so they need to get a wake up call. A lot and I mean a lot of white people love watermelon and so do blacks so what..??? Now they have gone so far gone that we aren’t allowed to like the same food??? Thank God my men working for me at my moving company didn’t go around whining about all this stupid crap. We had picnics and ate watermelon and BBQ ribs on the grill , hot dogs and hamburgers…if they would of said something dumb like I am offended , I would of told them to leave then. You don’t have to stay. But I had real men working for me that realized that we are all human..we all breath the same air, we bleed out red..God gave all of us breathe…so get over it. you will have a man lose his position because a few of the black men there was offended..ask the rest of them…oh wait they were to busy enjoying the watermelon with the rest of the men. Pink around the watermelon is a sign of fighting breast cancer..or does that offend you too.

  • Harvey CathynDee James

now if there was a bucket of chicken with it then i woulda seen a problem with his intentions- but in season fruit- shouldnt have been a big deal especially if he had cut it up for serving first….lol maybe that was the problem???
