What We Know About The Ambush Murder Of Hero Deputy Patrick Sondron

Byron, Georgia – Peach County Sheriff’s Deputy Patrick Sondron was murdered during an ambush on Sunday night. Another deputy was also shot during the incident, and he is in critical condition.

In the initial report, two people were riding ATVs when they were confronted by Ralph Elrod, who was armed with some sort of firearm. The ATV riders left and called the police. Peach County Deputy Patrol Sondron and Deputy Daryl Smallwood responded and immediately upon their arrival they were both shot without warning by Elrod. The ATV riders called 911 to report the downed officers. Peach County Deputies and Byron Police Officers responded and got into a gunfight with the suspect. During the gunfight, the suspect was shot at least once in the abdomen.

Ralph Elrod is being treated for his gunshot wound.

Deputy Patrick Sondron was later pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital. Deputy Daryl Smallwood remains in critical condition.

Sheriff Terry Deese of the Peach County Sheriff’s Department told WGXA, “They’re just like you and me. They’re great men. Both of them have small kids. Had a lot of life ahead of them.”

Deputy Sondron had served his community for over 12 years as a law enforcement officer.

We aren’t even a full week into November and Deputy Patrick Sondron is the 6th officer killed in the line of duty this month, and the 117th officer killed in the line of duty in 2016. Gunfire deaths of police officers are up 65% this year.
