Blackfoot Police Officer Assaulted by Suspect During Arrest

Blackfoot, ID – A Hero Blackfoot Police Officer received injuries when he was choked and bitten by a suspect earlier today, Sunday, December 18, 2016.  The suspect is in custody.

According to news sources, a Blackfoot PD Officer responded to a call of a disturbance at a residence on Center Street shortly after 7 a.m. this morning.  The BPD Officer was arresting the suspect, Javier Ramirez, age 31, when he began fighting the Officer.  A press release from this morning stated that “during the arrest, the individual became combative, resulting in a physical altercation with the officer.”  The Blackfoot Police Officer requested assistance and multiple Officers responded.  Ramirez was then taken into custody.

The press release further said that  “the officer sustained minor injuries from being bitten and choked by the suspect.” Both the fallen Hero Blackfoot Officer and Ramirez were transported to Bingham Memorial Hospital for treatment.  The Blackfoot Police Officer was treated and released.

Ramirez was charged with one count of  Felony Aggravated Assault or Battery Upon Certain Personnel, and one count of Misdemeanor Injury to a Child.  Upon his release from the hospital, Ramirez was taken to the Bingham County Jail.  His bond was set at $500,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court for his first hearing on December 22, 2016.  The Blackfoot Officer has not been identified. No details have been released about the child’s name or condition.

Under Idaho law, Aggravated Battery Upon Certain Personnel is punishable by up to five years in prison. Misdemeanor charges carry a punishment of up to one year in local jail.
