Officer Brian Murphy In Critical Condition
Ashwaubenon, WI – Ashwaubenon Public Safety Officer Brian Murphy, age 34, was struck by another vehicle on Saturday night, July 22.
The incident occurred about 11:25 PM in a heavy rain storm on Interstate 41 southbound, south of Waube Lane, according to WBAY. Officer Murphy and another officer were at the scene of a vehicle fire. Cones and flares were set out on the roadway to direct traffic, and there were a number of emergency vehicles, with lights and flashers, present.
Officer Murphy was struck while outside of his vehicle, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Ashwaubenon Police Captain Jody Crocker said that Officer Murphy was “in bad shape”, and that he has had two surgeries so far. He said that the first surgery was “life-saving”, and that his condition has improved, although he is still critical.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Officer Murphy, Kalin McGuire, called 911 when the crash occurred. She was arrested at the scene and has been charged with Injury by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle and OWI Passenger under 16.
In a Facebook post, Ashwaubenon Public Safety said:
“On July 22, 2017 at 11:25 PM Ashwaubenon Public Safety Officer Brian Murphy was struck by vehicle on Interstate 41 southbound, south of Waube Ln.
Officer Murphy, a 2 year veteran of Ashwaubenon Public Safety was outside of his vehicle and was wearing his reflective safety vest. He had his emergency lights lit along cones and flares out on the roadway to divert traffic at the scene of a vehicle fire when he was struck by the vehicle. There were numerous emergency vehicles on the highway with their emergency lights lit.
During the scene of the vehicle fire the 911 dispatch center received a call of an officer struck by a vehicle. The dispatcher began doing radio status test with the officers and did not get a response from Officer Murphy.
Officer Murphy was found on the side of the roadway by a fellow officer and emergency life-saving treatment was provided. Ashwaubenon Public Safety Medical Personnel treated and transported their fellow officer to a local hospital where he underwent lifesaving surgery.
The Brown County Sheriff’s Office along with the Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting the crash investigation.
The driver of the vehicle which struck Officer Murphy, a 28 year old Greenleaf woman was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle while under the Influence of Intoxicants Causing Injury and Failure to Yield for an Emergency Vehicle.
Officer Murphy has undergone further surgery yesterday and his condition has improved but is still critical but stable.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol are conducting the investigation.
